Dr. Maris joined the Rocky Mountain Blood and Marrow Transplant Program in July of 2005. Dr. Maris specializes in medical oncology/hematology. Originally from Pittsburgh, Dr. Maris earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania.

He completed his internal medicine residency and fellowships in oncology/hematology at the University of Washington/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Dr. Maris entered the field of medicine because of the opportunities it provides to help people with life-threatening problems. Dr. Maris was drawn to medical oncology because of his interest in therapeutic technology, clinical research and his desire to improve cancer treatment results.

Dr. Maris believes that physicians are educator/guides during the cancer treatment process and patients should be empowered with the knowledge to guide their decisions. According to Dr. Maris, patient understanding of the underlying disease process and therapeutic options is a requirement in the shared clinical decision making between the patient and his/her physician.

Dr. Maris is an active researcher. He is currently exploring various research opportunities, including the use of nonmyeloablative research protocols for older and infirm patients with hematologic malignancies. Dr. Maris is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
